New Seats for the Cinematheque

If there's one thing that the Vancity International Film Center has on the Cinematheque it's the ultra comfortable European seats complete with cupholders. Well come mid-November this will be no more. Due to a kind donation by the owner of Festival Cinemas the old and squeak-inducing chairs will be replaced with chairs that were previously used at the Fifth Avenue cinema. The Cinematheque will be shut down for a week or so to install the new chairs. Capacity will only be decreased by around 5% but I think everyone who sees such marathon films as War & Peace and Phantom India will be more than happy to see these films with slightly less people. The question, of course, is whether or not these seats will be sufficient for even longer films such as last year's screening of Out 1 at Vancity.

The real test would be the 24 hour movie fundraiser that the Cinematheque used to do years ago. Fascinating stuff though it apparently never brought in enough money to warrant such an event.

First post - what this blog is about

I used to love telling my friends that whenever they told me something in confidence that they would risk seeing it in my blog. This being a joke since I didn't have a blog. But now that I do I guess it's still a joke because this blog will not reveal salacious secrets from my friends and family.

Instead this will deal with numerous issues of cinema, in particular in Vancouver. I hope to offer reviews of movies, news items pertaining to our numerous cinemas, discussions on the lack of youth attending film screenings and updates on where to buy DVDs online.

Hope this proves to be informative, entertaining and thought-provoking. I also hope that eventually it will become a well-used open forum for discussion.
