If there's one thing that the Vancity International Film Center has on the Cinematheque it's the ultra comfortable European seats complete with cupholders. Well come mid-November this will be no more. Due to a kind donation by the owner of Festival Cinemas the old and squeak-inducing chairs will be replaced with chairs that were previously used at the Fifth Avenue cinema. The Cinematheque will be shut down for a week or so to install the new chairs. Capacity will only be decreased by around 5% but I think everyone who sees such marathon films as War & Peace and Phantom India will be more than happy to see these films with slightly less people. The question, of course, is whether or not these seats will be sufficient for even longer films such as last year's screening of Out 1 at Vancity.
The real test would be the 24 hour movie fundraiser that the Cinematheque used to do years ago. Fascinating stuff though it apparently never brought in enough money to warrant such an event.
